Japanese ads
Over at Japan Probe, a solid blog I recently found and stuck in my list of feeds, there’s a post giving out awards to Japanese commercials. Lots of these make for amusing watching.
There used to be a website (”the hall of shame”? forgot its name) that featured foreign celebrities’ appearances in Japanese ads—Sylvester Stallone selling ham, Charlie Sheen tied up on a sofa as a woman walks by in high heels. I think that was for some clothing brand. Can’t find that site now, but YouTube seems to be a place to go get those goodies these days. And one nice thing about watching ads online is that while TV program creators get upset when you view their stuff for free, without sitting through the ads that fund it, the creators of the ads themselves are quite happy to let you watch them over and over, in whatever medium you please.
So. Foreigners are still wandering over here and appearing in commercials for products they will never actually use in real life. Tommy Lee Jones drinking Boss canned coffee, Kiefer Sutherland shouting to the Japanese guy that YES YOU CAN EAT MY LAST PIECE OF CALORIE MATE NOW SHUT UP I AM DEFUSING THIS BOMB. Those are both available on the Japan Probe page linked above. Go check them out.
